Market participants are hesitant to pay a premium for recycled lithium, even as the EU Battery Regulation mandates 6% recycled lithium in batteries by 2031. Claas Hoffend of AMG Lithium raised concerns at the International Congress for Battery Recycling, noting that automakers are unlikely to bear higher costs for recycled materials. The limited recycling capacity in Europe, coupled with challenges in achieving battery-grade purity, adds to the reluctance. While recycling efforts are growing, industry players believe that without stronger incentives or mandates, recycled lithium is unlikely to command a price premium over primary lithium.
